The Mahra Rohtak Play(ce)making project provides and opportunity to reimagine public spaces and streets for safer, inclusive and public centric spaces, keeping the focus on the youth. The scope of work includes documentation of two streets, design and layout developments and experimentations of Tactical Urbanism. Proposal for two streets have been worked out keeping in mind the character of each street. The Sector-14 street is admist a residential area for which a homely vibe has been created by provided vending activities, pocket parks, neighbourhood plazas, etc. Medical Road is an institutional street for which youth appealing spaces have been proposed, such as food zones, theme plazas, public parks, etc. Each street with its character tells its own story through the spaces designed for them.

1. Sector 14 Plan.jpg

The existing conditions of Sector 14 Road reveal a calm residential environment with minimal vehicular traffic, green spaces, and a presence of youth. However, the area struggles with inadequate street lighting, discontinuous footpaths, a lack of public transport, and safety concerns during nighttime. The proposed structured plan for Sector 14 aims to address these issues by enhancing street safety through organized street junctions, safe pedestrian crossings, and improved lighting with CCTV monitoring. Additionally, the plan introduces public realms like plazas, better walking experiences with continuous footpaths, and the utilization of underutilized spaces to boost the quality of life and ensure a safer, more vibrant environment for residents and visitors alike.

2. Medical Road Plan.jpg

Medical Road is currently one of the busiest and most vibrant streets, serving as an important connector and being safe at all hours. It is characterized by wide streets surrounded by parks and public spaces, offering significant potential for transformation. However, the street suffers from inadequate pedestrian pathways, misused vacant plots, unorganized parking, and unequal distribution of activities. The proposed structured plan aims to enhance the safety and functionality of Medical Road by introducing organized street junctions, safe crossings at regular intervals, shaded pathways, and cycle tracks. The plan also focuses on activating underutilized spaces through the creation of traffic parks, food plazas, and green parking areas, while improving overall mobility with CCTV monitoring and better pedestrian infrastructure to ensure a safer and more accessible environment.
